An introduction to ripping and encoding songs on Linux...
You will be presented with two rippers, e.g. two software tools designed for this purpose, cdparanoia and cdstatus. They create .raw files, or more often .wav files. Both types of files are of CD quality and exist in an uncompressed format. As a consequence of their raw format, they are big in size. Keeping them in such form would waste our storage resources, so we will convert them to a more space-saving format.
