This is a long article as Clarence journals the relevant events of each of the ten days -- and those start after he selects his distro...
I looked at the most used and the most supported of distributions and came to the conclusion that I would go with the Mandriva (formally Mandrake) distro. Now, it was a really close call because there are literally thousands of Linux distributions and over a dozen that are primarily used but I chose Mandriva because it was possibly the most likely distro that newcomers into the Linux realm would choose. It’s got 20+ languages in support, supports every processor imaginable, graphical installation and also has buttons that look edible. All of these things are possible “wow” factors that would grab a skeptic in, especially the purdy buttons.
